A quiet and beautiful country-house hotel in wonderful gardens, the Jardins do Lago has an intimate atmosphere enhanced by excellent service and first-class comforts.

Situated on a hill overlooking Funchal and surrounded by a stunning 6.4-acre garden full of rare trees and exotic flowers, this gorgeous property is now rightly regarded as one of the best hotels in Madeira. Built for the Blandy family in the middle of the 18th century, it became the residence of General Beresford, Commander of the British forces during the Napoleonic Wars.

It is without doubt an excellent example of how a traditional property rich in history, furnished with antiques and beautifully decorated, can be turned into an intimate and luxurious hotel. Breakfast can be taken on the veranda of the charming Pink Room in the original house, where you also find the cosy O Visconde bar in the main lounge - a perfect setting for cocktails. Dinner can often be taken alfresco in the elegant Beresford Restaurant, where Madeiran specialities vie with international cuisine.

Swans grace the tranquil pond in the gardens and, amongst the mango trees, there’s a large Oriental-style partly covered and heated swimming pool with bistro-bar. Health and exercise facilities include jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath and fitness room. A courtesy mini-bus runs twice each weekday to Funchal centre.

Superior twins in the new wing and junior suites - carefully refurbished large rooms with balconies in the 18th century house – are also available.
