imposingly just outside the ramparts of the historic capital, Valletta, Le Méridien Phoenicia is a magnificent ‘Grand Hotel’ of great character that exudes an endearing colonial atmosphere.

The hotel has a rich heritage and is noted for excellent service and also, unusual for its city location, lovely garden walks with various elevated views of the harbour. A short walk through the delightful gardens leads to the heated swimming pool and children’s pool. Retaining much of its 1920s’ elegance and style, the hotel’s main lounge area is furnished with sumptuous armchairs and sofas, a perfect setting for traditional afternoon tea. Dining is a delightful experience, with a delicious breakfast buffet presented in the Phoenix restaurant or on the terrace, and for dinner there is also an à la carte menu.

The views from the verandah, especially at night, are enchanting. Warm summer evenings often see the pool-side bistro open for dinner as well as lunch. The Pegasus Brasserie has a more informal setting, and the comfortable club bar - which is adorned with fascinating photographs depicting historic events and visiting celebrities - is the perfect place for an after dinner drink.

The hotel is ideally situated being close to the bus terminus and the imposing gated entrance to Valletta’s narrow streets with their grand palaces, shops, bars and restaurants.
