Lisbon

Sitting on the north bank of the River Tagus.much of Lisbon is hilly with cobbled streets and there are lots of places with superb views.

The centre is essentially 18th.century and the old quarters give an insight into their rich history. The chiado district has been beautifully rebuilt after a disastrous fire a few years ago.

The districts of Bairro Alto and Estrela are arguably the most picturesque districts with lively bars and restaurants.Belem,at the mouth of the Tagus is a spacious suberb with lovely parks and a cafe filled promenade.

EATING OUT. Eating out is a pleasure and generally good value. all along Lisbon`s recently developed and lively dockside area are many restaurants and bars whilst the pretty Bairro Alto area has lots of traditional and less expensive places to eat and drink.

PLACES TO GO. Lisbon is a delight. The monument to the Discoveries ,16th century Jeronimos Monestry and Torr de Belem further along the river Tagus are the most photographed symbols of the city along with the trams and the Tagus Bridge.

The narrow atmospheric streets of the Alfama are not to be missed, and there are wonderful views from St. George`s castle.Other places are the Gulbenkian Museum and the fado(music) houses of the Bairro Alto.

Just 25 kms from Lisbon lovely, romantic Sintra set amongst green hills where palaces ,a medieval castle and grand mansions are hidden.
